James J. Grimes
Photographer/Educator

Jim Grimes Photography LLC is owned and operated by James J. (Jim) Grimes of Kingwood, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Jim began his photography career in high school when he became one of two student photographers for his school’s yearbook. Using a school camera, he photographed many of his classmates and many of these photos appeared in the school’s yearbooks during his four years of high school.

Soon after graduation Jim was able to purchase a Canon AE-1, a lower-end professional quality camera. With the Canon, Jim was able to expose thousands of photographs, mostly of people, but also including landscapes, street photography, sports, cityscapes, and any other subject that seemed to be photographically interesting.

Jim devoted himself to taking college photography courses, attending workshops, reading important photography books, collecting and studying the work of photographers who were making an impression on him, and socializing with some of those same photographers. Through many years of photographing, developing and printing, and exhibiting, Jim began to narrow his focus to three areas – portraiture, street photography, and fine art photography.

Jim now does his work with a variety of cameras and media – studio work is mostly digital, street photography is 35mm black and white film, and fine art work is handled by a number of medium and large format cameras shooting only black and white film. Interestingly, Jim still has and uses the Canon AE-1 he purchased in 1979. It has had several thousand rolls of filmthrough it in its 30 year career.

Jim Grimes Photography LLC came into existence in 2003 and a studio was opened in Frenchtown in 2006. A move to the current location at 108 Harrison Street, street level, was made early in 2009.

In addition to his duties as a studio photographer, Jim also teaches. He is on the faculty of Ocean County College (OCC) in Toms River, NJ and teaches in the evening division at Hunterdon County Polytech in Flemington, NJ. Jim also hosts and teaches several courses in his studio.

Photography is his passion and has defined his life for many years. Lord willing, he hopes for a long and productive life.
